- "The top pickups in the Ortofon lines are called 'Black'. The top quintet underlines its claim with an extremely light as well as hard boron needle carrier, on which a stone ground according to the Shibata shape sits, which is supposed to get a maximum of information out of the groove with the lowest distortion. This is induced in 'Aucurum' - wires of gold-plated, monocrystalline copper of the highest purity. In the interests of low mass, the coils have only a few windings, which promotes liveliness but also reduces the output voltage by around three decibels compared with bronze. The Black repays the effort and investment with radical openness and accuracy. Like the larger Cadenza Black, it is a master of precise straightforwardness. Every note is in place, every instrument, every voice precisely delineated. In fact, Ortofon's best quintet presents tiny incidental noises as if on a silver platter, creating authentic ambience, especially in live recordings. The pithy, edgy bass sets the pulse for the fanned-out overtone range. The Quintet Black's dynamic and homogeneous mid-range, as well as its uninhibited joy of playing and its three-dimensionality, make it look like the 1050 Euro Cadenza red, Ortofon's entry-level model in the next class, which presents music in a more mature and mature way, if not in a more racy way. It just plays in a league higher."
