Reports[edit]

  • Report from Hifi Museum:
  • Fisher AD-840/AD-844
  • Since the two Fisher CD players are virtually identical except for slight differences in features and design, we dedicate a joint review to them. So the AD-840 is in silver and the AD-844 in black, both have very fast and completely extending drawers, so that the playing surface of the CD does not have to be touched when inserting. However, the noise produced when the drawer retracts and extends could be a little less, especially with such a low electrical noise producing medium as the CD.
  • Very easy on the eyes and elegant is the display, which automatically shows the total playing time and the number of tracks contained for a short time after the loading process, the elapsed track time during operation and the remaining time of the disc or program by pressing a button.
  • Convenient access
  • The access options are pleasing. With the fast forward and rewind you can listen, and after about three seconds the device switches automatically to a higher speed. Furthermore, there is the jump function in both directions, by pressing the stop button once the laser scanner jumps back to the beginning of the track, twice pressed to the beginning of the CD.
  • The program memory holds a maximum of 23 tracks, during the programming process the display automatically shows the total time of the program. If desired, the entire disc or program can be repeated. Also, once stored, the track numbers can be recalled in sequence.
  • As additional features, the AD-844 has the ability to repeat a section to be marked between any two time points that can be set, as well as a headphone output with level control that provides sufficient output power.
  • The AD-844's labeling of a small slide switch causes a stir. "Single" does not mean the player's ability to play single CDs, which do not exist (yet), but the automatic switch to pause status after finishing a track. Another switch position allows timer operation.
  • Frequency response not optimal

Even if a slight level drop in the upper band range has hardly any effect on the listening experience, the manufacturer must be advised to take more care here, especially since it is obviously a series dispersion.

Otherwise, both devices behave very well with regard to their measurement results. This is especially true for the immunity to interference, which is important in practice. The quality profile is valid for the AD-840, only the bar length "equipment" has to be extended by one step for the AD-844, also it missed the absolute top class by a few points. rp
