Gegründet als Gesellschaft für drahtlose Telegraphie m.b.H. auf Bestrebungen von Wilhelm II. aus den Nachrichtenaktivitäten der AEG (Georg Graf von Arco und Adolf Slaby) im Kabelwerk Oberspree und von Siemens & Halske begann das Unternehmen 1903 mit 33 Mitarbeitern und 52 Reichspatenten beider Unternehmen. Das Stammkapital dieses "Joint Ventures" betrug 300.000 Goldmark, die Anteile waren zu je 50% bei der AEG und bei Siemens. Die Leitung übernahm Graf von Arco, zu dieser Zeit 34 Jahre alt. Der Markenname Telefunken wurde am 11. November 1903 als Warenzeichen beim Kaiserlichen Patentamt eingetragen.
