Die Firma Sanyo wurde 1947 von Toshio Iue, einem früheren Angestellten der Firma Matsushita (Panasonic, Technics) gegründet. Ähnlich wie andere japanische Firmen fing Sanyo nach dem 2. Weltkrieg klein an. Die ersten Produkte waren Dynamos für Fahrräder. Im Jahr 1950 wird die SANYO Electric Co. Ltd. gegründet. 1952 beginnt SANYO mit der Herstellung von Unterhaltungselektronik. Das erste Radio mit Kunststoffgehäuse wird vorgestellt. 1953 folgt Sanyos erste Produktion von Fernsehgeräten. Der Gang an die Börse 1954. 1958 begann die Massenproduktion von Transistoren und HiFi Geräten. 1964 folgte die Produktion von Farbfernsehgeräten für den Weltmarkt. 1971 Produktionsbeginn eigener Videorekorder für den Weltmarkt. 1975 die Übernahme der Firma Fisher die bereits 1937 von Avery Fisher gegründet wurde.
