Company profile
Sanyo was founded in 1947 by Toshio Iue, a former employee of Matsushita (Panasonic, Technics). Similar to other Japanese companies, Sanyo started small after World War 2. The first products were dynamos for bicycles. In 1950 the SANYO Electric Co. Ltd. was founded. In 1952 SANYO starts manufacturing consumer electronics. The first radio with plastic housing is introduced. 1953 Sanyo's first production of television sets follows. The company went public in 1954. Mass production of transistors and hi-fi equipment began in 1958. 1964 followed the production of color TV sets for the world market. 1971 Start of production of own video recorders for the world market. 1975 the takeover of the company Fisher which was already founded in 1937 by Avery Fisher. Brand name in Japan: "OTTO". 2010 Sanyo was taken over by Panasonic.
