Der A-838 war ein Vollverstärker der großen Pioneer-Serie der späten 80er und frühen Neunziger, also Modelle A-6xx bis A-8xx. Seine Audiotechnik basierte auf dem A-858, zusätzlich verfügte der A-838 über einen Videoteil mit S-Video und Composite-Anschlüssen, wie der vorangegangene A-717V. Außerdem besaß er eine Hochglanzfront und edelholzfunierte Holzseitenteile, analog zur Urushi-Serie. Leider in Deutschland so gut wie nie gebraucht zu finden.
