On 28 November 1938, the company was founded by Paul Metz in Nuremberg.[10] From 1939, the manufacturing program for Carl Zeiss was expanded to include the production of electronic homing devices for fighter aircraft. Until the end of World War II in 1945, shortwave transmitters and receivers as well as other radio technology were produced. After military production was completely discontinued at the end of the Second World War, the company restarted in 1947 with the production of radio equipment in the newly created Radio Technology Group (renamed Consumer Electronics in the mid-1970s).

Bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs 1945 wurden Kurzwellen-Sender und -Empfänger sowie sonstige Funktechnik produziert. Nachdem mit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die militärische Produktion komplett entfiel, begann im Jahre 1947 der unternehmerische Neustart mit der Produktion von Radiogeräten im neu geschaffenen Unternehmensbereich Radiotechnik (Mitte der 1970er Jahre in Unterhaltungselektronik umbenannt).

In 1952, Metz began producing universal flash units for cameras. 1955 saw the start of television production. In 1957, a sound furniture factory for wooden cabinets was built, which was expanded in 1969 to include a plastic production facility.[11]

In 1993, founder Paul Metz died. The company was continued by his 69-year-old widow Helene Metz. She did not retire from operations until 2010.[12]

After the company had long suffered from price pressure from Asian competitors, insolvency was filed with the Fürth District Court on 19 November 2014.[13][14] In January 2015, the company announced that about 110 of the 540 remaining jobs would be cut. At the end of March, the company announced that it had found two investors. This will split the company. The television set division will be taken over by the Chinese electronics group Skyworth. Skyworth is the leading television manufacturer in China and has been pursuing an international growth course for years; the company is opening up new markets primarily through acquisitions. The other divisions of Metz-Werke, flash units and plastics technology, will be bought by the Daum Group, which, like Metz, also comes from the Fürth area. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. A total of 298 employees were still to be employed at Metz at the beginning of June 2015.

Nachdem das Unternehmen lange Zeit unter dem Preisdruck der asiatischen Konkurrenz gelitten hatte, wurde am 19. November 2014 beim Amtsgericht Fürth Insolvenz beantragt.[13][14] Im Januar 2015 teilte das Unternehmen mit, dass etwa 110 der noch 540 Arbeitsplätze abgebaut werden sollen. Ende März kündigte das Unternehmen an, zwei Investoren gefunden zu haben. Damit wird das Unternehmen aufgeteilt. Die Fernsehgerätesparte wird der chinesische Elektronik-Konzern Skyworth übernehmen. Skyworth ist in China führender Fernsehhersteller und verfolgt seit Jahren einen internationalen Wachstumskurs, vor allem durch Zukäufe erschließt das Unternehmen neue Märkte. Die weiteren Sparten der Metz-Werke, die Blitzgeräte und Kunststofftechnik, kauft die Daum-Gruppe, die ebenfalls wie Metz aus dem Raum Fürth kommt. Über den Kaufpreis wurde Stillschweigen vereinbart. Insgesamt sollten Anfang Juni 2015 noch 298 Mitarbeiter bei Metz beschäftigt sein.
