On 28 November 1938, the company was founded by Paul Metz in Nuremberg.[10] From 1939, the manufacturing program for Carl Zeiss was expanded to include the production of electronic homing devices for fighter aircraft. Until the end of World War II in 1945, shortwave transmitters and receivers as well as other radio technology were produced. After military production was completely discontinued at the end of the Second World War, the company restarted in 1947 with the production of radio equipment in the newly created Radio Technology Group (renamed Consumer Electronics in the mid-1970s).
In 1952, Metz began producing universal flash units for cameras. 1955 saw the start of television production. In 1957, a sound furniture factory for wooden cabinets was built, which was expanded in 1969 to include a plastic production facility.[11]
In 1993, founder Paul Metz died. The company was continued by his 69-year-old widow Helene Metz. She did not retire from operations until 2010.[12]
After the company had long suffered from price pressure from Asian competitors, insolvency was filed with the Fürth District Court on 19 November 2014.[13][14] In January 2015, the company announced that about 110 of the 540 remaining jobs would be cut. At the end of March, the company announced that it had found two investors. This will split the company. The television set division will be taken over by the Chinese electronics group Skyworth. Skyworth is the leading television manufacturer in China and has been pursuing an international growth course for years; the company is opening up new markets primarily through acquisitions. The other divisions of Metz-Werke, flash units and plastics technology, will be bought by the Daum Group, which, like Metz, also comes from the Fürth area. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. A total of 298 employees were still to be employed at Metz at the beginning of June 2015.
As a result of the insolvency, the company was sold to two foreign investors at the beginning of May 2015.
