Technics sets new benchmark for turntable technologies of the future

Audio legends of tomorrow: the direct-drive turntable

Technics SP-10R and the SL-1000R turntable system

Hamburg, January 8, 2018: audio brand Technics is expanding its line-up of high-end audio components with two new reference-class models: the SP-10R direct-drive turntable and the corresponding SL-1000R complete turntable system.

With the introduction of these two models, Technics seamlessly continues its unparalleled brand history in the pursuit of the highest analogue sound experiences. The series around the legendary SP-10 turntable continues to delight audiophiles around the world.

Technics turntables: the legend lives on.

In 1970, Technics introduced the SP-10, the world's first direct-drive turntable. The SP-10 series' excellent playback quality and reliability soon made it the first choice for broadcasters as well as the object of desire for audiophiles around the world. The great fascination of direct drive has always been its ability to eliminate sound degradation, eliminating the sonic degradation typically associated with other types of turntables due to synchronization and micro-vibrations between the drive motor and the transmission mechanisms.

As an innovator and creator of emotional music components, Technics secured a firm place in the heart of the music world and shaped music history like no other audio brand - from the roots of hip-hop to the rapid rise of international star DJs and into the living rooms of millions of music lovers who could listen to their favourite tracks at home exactly as they were created by artists and producers.

The SP-10R and SL-1000R continue this legacy by impressively combining the decades of experience of Japanese sound engineers with the latest technological advances. In doing so, Technics sets a new milestone for modern turntable technologies and underlines its own claim to product development and design for the highest analogue vinyl performance.

New standards in extremely low-noise sound reproduction: At the heart of the Technics SP-10R is a direct-drive motor with an iron-core-less double coil stator and twin rotor. The motor is equipped with nine coils on each side of the coil carrier and has a twelve-pole control. As a result, it achieves synchronism with a deviation of less than 0.015 percent - and is thus in a range in which the deviation can no longer be detected with the usual measuring methods.

Tungsten weights with an extremely high specific gravity are used in the platter of the SP-10R. These are embedded in the outer rim of a 10mm thick brass platter, which in turn is connected to the main platter made of die-cast aluminium. This results in a total weight of the platter of 7.9kg with an inertia of approximately one ton x cm². On the underside of the aluminium platter a vibration damping layer of rubber is also applied. This results in a three-layer construction that combines high stiffness with excellent vibration damping vibration damping properties.

In addition, to prevent unwanted noise and vibration, the SP-10R's control unit is separated from the main chassis. A sophisticated switching power supply is used to achieve the best control characteristics for high torque. This incorporates a specific technological solution that suppresses noise effects on the pickup system, ensuring an extremely low-noise power supply. The SP-10R also uses an extremely noise-resistant system for communication between the main unit and the control unit.

Thanks to these careful noise reduction measures, the SP-10R achieves a noise-to-voltage ratio that is unrivalled in the world of analogue turntables.

The tonearm and tonearm base provide superior sampling characteristics: For scanning all information in the record groove, the new Technics reference turntables are equipped with a statically balanced S-shaped universal tonearm with a lightweight but highly damping magnesium arm tube. Bearings of ultimate precision are used in the gimbal bearing design. Only Japanese specialists with many years of experience are able to carry out the complicated assembly and fine adjustment. They achieve an extremely low of the tonearm and thus ensure a highly precise scanning behaviour. The tonearm's internal wiring uses stranded wires made of oxygen-free copper (OFC). In this way, the music signal sampled by the pickup is not affected in any way, and the music recording retains its full vitality.

The tonearm base is firmly coupled to the platter chassis, keeping the characteristics for the sampling conditions between the tonearm supporting structure and the platter bearings constant at all times. This provides the best possible protection for the scanning process, allowing the tonearm's strengths to be optimally exploited. Additional tonearm bases can be purchased as an option. Short or long tonearm versions from other manufacturers can also be connected to the tonearm base. Including the built-in tonearm, up to three tonearms are possible.

Expanding the outstanding portfolio of direct-drive turntables: Meanwhile, the new SP-10R and SL-1000R models have been conceived and designed not only as replacements for, but also as extensions to, Technics' outstanding turntable systems. This means that users of older Technics SP-10MK2 and SP-10MK3 models can replace their old turntables, including the control unit, with the new SP-10R, retaining the plinth and tonearm in their entirety. The outer dimensions as well as the screw positions of the SP-10R have been deliberately designed to match those of the SP-10MK2 and SP-10MK3 models. The SP-10R is therefore backwards compatible. The same applies to the control unit of the SP-10R, which has the same shape and dimensions as the control unit of the SP-10MK2.
