- Founded by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland (they probably thought that "MartinLogan" sounded better than "SandersSutherland" or even "GayleRon").
- End of the 1970s first considerations to improve the "electrostats" known since about 1920
- 1980 first prototype made of aluminium foil, but it "went up in smoke" quickly
- further experiments led to an ultra-light, transparent Mylar film
- 1982 concept was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago and won the CES Design and Engineering Award
- At the 1983 Consumer Electronics Show, the prototype of the Monolith was presented to great acclaim.
