What to look for when buying:
- When considering a purchase, the foam woofer surrounds should be checked, as they have almost certainly disintegrated after 37 years now (see a recording below). A repair is possible without problems, but should be done by a professional. After my own very good experience, Mr. Hebermehl is here expressly recommended.
Since the grilles have to be removed for inspection, I recommend patience and a clean wide spatula with which the grille can be carefully removed from the baffle. If you work carefully from all sides, the grille will come off the rubber-like mass. If too much force is used, the grille will quickly become crooked.
Remarks:
- The L 620/1 is a high-quality HiFi loudspeaker combination for floor-standing or shelf operation with a wide dispersion angle in a closed, acoustically damped cabinet. It has been designed by Braun AG as a shelf speaker and is suitable for medium and high power amplifiers. Suitable for medium-sized and large rooms and preferably recommended for installation in shelves and wall shelves.
Personal listening impression:
- Very good room imaging. Good depth and localization for a 3 way speaker with a wide dispersion at a relatively low net volume (15 litres). Very natural reproduction of voices and acoustic instruments. Equally suitable for lovers of classical music, jazz and any instrumental music. Amazingly deep bass reproduction with sufficient bass precision. Sound character can be described as brilliant without interfering mids. Due to the good efficiency this speaker is already "there" at room volume. An advantage not to be underestimated if you don't want to force your surroundings to listen in.
Positioning:
It is strongly recommended not to neuter this speaker by placing it on a shelf. Even if this was the propagated location at the time, the L620 can show its potential on stands with sufficient distance to the rear wall. This way the speaker is able to produce sufficient deep bass when required, but gains in transparency and neutrality. It is also not suitable for wall mounting like some other Braun speakers of this era (keyword L550). However, the L620 is acoustically superior to them. A qualitative classification will certainly be close to the "big" sister L 710 without fully reaching its bass precision.
