  • Top of the line model from Aiwa in the early 90s in the pre-Sony era. Sold at least in 1992 and 1993 with the additional designation "Evolution Series". Sound-wise quite appealing unit, which didn't have to hide from the competition. Had no lobby then, has no lobby today - a blessing for the used buyer.

The XA-950Z was Aiwa`s top-of-the-line integrated amplifier at the beginning of the nineties and came off the production line at the then Aiwa Technology Park in Newbridge/South Wales. Which makes it "Made in UK", but of course the amp is clearly a Japanese late eighties design - with that certain likeable Aiwa touch. If the line driver wasn't also an opamp stage but a discrete Class-A circuit, the XA-950Z would be about the same quality as a mid-range Sony ES amp (5s or 6s). More or less, because it lacks a bit of the solidity and haptic quality of an ES amp, but you can't hear that. The phono preamplifier is built economically but is not an "afterthought" like amps from e.g. Yamaha (5er) or middle Kenwood's from the time and qualitatively a step better equipped like e.g. a Sony TA-F400 (or a TA-FA3ES/TA-F5xxES). The power amps are a SIPP-KISS design with the 2SC2922/2SA1216 combo, bipolar throughout and powered by a fairly soft power supply. By the way, the power supply of the phono preamplifier passes through two active filter stages. So, within the limits of a tight budget, a lot of thought has been put into this, which is commendable since it is by no means a matter of course. The opamp equipment in the preamplifier consists of NJM2068D types, which is comparatively high-quality and their supply does not exceed ± 15V. As mentioned above, the XA-950Z is a very appealing sounding device in factory condition and offers an upper mid-range sound without any advertising-effective material battle. From today's perspective, with modern OpAmps and a selective-specific component upgrade there is still a lot that can be done relatively easily.
