Digital radio, or DAB for short, uses digital signals instead of the traditional analogue transmission. The number of radio stations you can receive depends on your region. Due to the way the station signals are transmitted, DAB can double the number of stations you can receive.

DAB offers excellent sound quality. With this technology, the receiver picks up the strongest signal while ignoring all others. The result is interference-free reception - wherever you are. So no more hissing, crackling or volume fluctuations as with the old analogue reception. The bit rates for DAB were hotly debated in the hi-fi journals. Recordable broadcasts (not in mono) require a transmission rate of 120 kbps or more. This value was set by the regulatory authorities - but most radio stations already significantly exceed this threshold.

With DAB, you can find a station by its station name. So instead of having to go through the hassle of remembering the frequency of your favourite station as you used to, you can find the programme you want in a flash by selecting by name. Anything superfluous has been done away with, because you're more likely to remember the station name than the station frequency. And with digital radio, there are no more frequencies. You simply select the station using the station list in the display.

With DAB, you have much more information available about the program than with RDS reception. DAB radios always have a display that shows information about the station and the program. Many stations also transmit the name of the artist, the title of the current track - and sometimes the next track. If you listen to an opera on a classical music station, the piece, the composer, the performers, the orchestra, the conductor - in some cases even a translation of the lyrics - are often shown on the display! This technology will be developed even further in the future: Additional, enhanced information and the ability to program your radio to record your favorite programs.
