This device is a frequency response equalizer ! - It has the eigenliche task to reverse the frequency response on the record - as original before the cutting, not to amplify!!!Of course it should be called correctly equalizer - preamplifier.my hot tip: Pro Ject Phono Box DS!!!HW

It is both!

It amplifies the low level of pickups (with MM around 2-5 mV) to line level (150-200 mV) and equalizes the frequency response. These devices are therefore often called "equalizer preamps".
