Remarks

With the PCM-R300, Sony offered a comparatively inexpensive, "semi-professional" variant of the consumer model DTC-790 as a competitor to models from Tascam (e.g. DA-20). The PCM-R300 shows no differences to the DTC-790 except for the missing copy protection system SCMS and the grey colour scheme. And although the strategy to offer consumer models (e.g. DTC-77ES as PCM-2700/2700A) also as studio devices often went along with adapted connections (e.g. the PCM-2700 had XLR sockets instead of RCA analogue connections with adjustable sensitivity resp. output level via hidden rotary potentiometers, and no optical TOSL connectors), the PCM-R300 does not show any differences to the DTC-790. output level and no optical TOSLINK digital connections), the PCM-R300 did without them in favour of standard RCA sockets, which made this recorder fully suitable for any hi-fi system.
