German Institute for Standardization.

DIN is a non-profit, registered association whose task is the development of Norms. It also represents German interests in international standardization bodies and adopts international standards for Germany.

There are also DIN standards in the field of hi-fi and audio engineering. Still known, for example, is the now obsolete series of standards DIN 45500, by which minimum requirements for hi-fi equipment were specified. Today, corresponding requirements are internationally standardized, the corresponding standards (e.g. from the IEC) are also recognized by DIN.

The abbreviation is also applied informally, e.g. in the designation DIN plug.
