Company Profile
Kenwood was founded after World War 2 in 1946 as a radio manufacturer by Jiro Kasuga in Komagane City as Kasuga Radio Co. Ltd. and changed its name to Kasuga Radio Industry Corporation in 1950.
In 1955, a mass production plant was established in Tokyo and in 1960 the company was renamed Trio Corporation.
In 1961, the company was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and with a U.S. branch in Los Angeles in 1963, expansion and worldwide marketing began.
On May 14, 1968, the European branch opened in Belgium.
In 1972, the company's founder Jiro Kasuga left the company and founded a new company called Kensonic.
From 1980 onwards, the company specialised in the production and marketing of radio and cassette equipment for motor vehicles "Car Audio".
In 1982 Kenwood is involved in the development of the first CD player.
In 1986, the company changed its name again to Kenwood Corporation and began manufacturing mobile CD players.
From 1992, the product range also included navigation systems for motor vehicles, which steadily expanded and also integrated mobile phone systems (PHP Personal Handy Phone System).
1997 Presentation of the receiver for the digital terrestrial audio broadcasting standard DAB in motor vehicles. Later, the integration of hard disk and DVD navigation systems, smartphones as well as the digitalization of professional radio according to the APCO-P25 and TETRA standards took place.
January 1999, Kenwood jointly develops the world's first mobile digital TV receiver.
August 2002, Kenwood U.S.A. Corporation begins selling the first digital radio systems in the U.S.A. January 2003, collaborates with the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International to apply voice synthesis technology to automotive applications.
April 2004, jointly founded the music distribution company Any Music Inc.
June 2005, the first Kenwood portable hard disk audio player is introduced.
2007, cooperation with Panasonic Corp. subsidiary Victor Company of Japan (JVC) was established.
Since 2011, Kenwood Corporation has been one of the three subsidiaries of JVC Kenwood Corporation or JVC Kenwood Group, along with JVC Ltd. and J & K Car Electronics Corporation.
