Special features
- ATRAC 3 enables longplay mode in mono and stereo. Stereo recording in LP2 with doubled recording time (MD 74 = 148 min.), in LP4 with four times recording time and moderate quality.

- Compared to the predecessor model JE 530, the JE 640 was 100 to 150 DM more expensive.
- The new compression ATRAC 3 had nothing to do with the previous ATRAC designations. This compression made it possible to achieve twice the recording time (LP2) or twice the recording time (LP4) on conventional MD. The devices of the whole series were downward compatible and could also record and play back in classic ATRAC systems. On the other hand, older MD decks could not play ATRAC 3.
