Philips VLP 720
Short description
Successor of the Philips VLP 600 and altogether second laserdisc picture turntable from Philips. This device came 1982 on the German market, had basically the same technology as the VLP 600, the housing and the remote control were however fundamentally optically revised and adapted not only to the time taste, but also to the CD player Philips CD 100, likewise appeared in 1982. Like all so-called picture turntables from the years until about 1986, the VLP 720 can only process analogue sound, as it was common on the early picture turntables. Nothing changed on the analog picture format until the end of the laserdisc, so this player can play all CAV and CLV discs, skip chapters, has frame forward and rewind and a smooth still picture, if inserted in PAL format. In contrast to later players, the VLP 720 still requires the disc to be placed on a "turntable" after opening a lid, analogous to handling a turntable, and to be turned over by hand after the end of the first side as well.
