Company profile

  • Sumo was a manufacturer of very powerful power amplifiers in the hifi and professional market. The intellectual owner of Sumo, James Bongiorno, founded this company after having worked very successfully for Wurlitzer, Marantz, Rectilinear Research, Dynaco, GAS and SAE in the U.S.A.. In the early 80's James Bongiorno founded the Sumo hifi brand with 2 Japanese businessmen. Due to a new outbreak of liver cancer, he retired from the successful Sumo around the mid 80's. After a successful surgery, he beat the cancer and created the Ampzilla 2000 at least as late as 2000. After Bongiorno's departure from Sumo, the end of the brand came after a short time. There is no service or spare parts available today. However, the devices enjoy an enthusiastic fan base due to their enormous power reserves and excellent sound characteristics.
