Reviews[edit]
- The Sony TA-F270,TA-F470,TA-F490 and TA-F511 integrated amplifiers are actually the same amplifier with rather gradual gradations in terms of component quality used, output stage transistors and transformers. They are the continental European versions of the UK models TA-F440E, TA-F442E and TA-F540E/TA-F542E plus the line/tone control stage from the slightly older TA-F420.
While the TA-F270 is a bit lower in quality (and practically identical to the TA-F500 sold in Japan without the "ES"), the other three German models are practically on the same level: upper mid-range. Which is in line with their position in the Sony range at the time.
- The British models are a little better in terms of sound, thanks to the missing line/tone control stage and the absence of FTZ filters.
- What they all have in common is a solid sheet metal dress and a clean interior construction.
In addition, the amplifiers are designed to be service-friendly and can be almost completely disassembled by loosening screws and plug connections and also easily reassembled. As with all Sony devices that were equipped with industrial quality components, a gradual deterioration of the playback quality becomes noticeable over the years that can only be eliminated by a general overhaul (*) and is due after more than 20 years of virtually every device that is offered second-hand. At this opportunity, better quality components should be installed and all Germany-Exclusive components should be removed according to the service manual. An overhaul costs about 100€ in components and takes a few hours. However, it is also worthwhile in terms of sound and brings these amplifiers virtually to mint "ES" sound level.
(*) At this point it should be mentioned that a general overhaul is NOT the simple exchange of all electrolytic capacitors against new ones according to the watering can principle. A little more brain power should be applied. Saves also a lot of money. The service manual is available for free download at various websites.
