Company profile[edit]
The Dual brand was once the epitome of high-quality turntables. In the 70s, together with the Thorens company, it regularly took the top places in record player tests.
The company was founded in 1906 by the Steidinger brothers in St. Georgen in the Black Forest. Dual was the largest manufacturer of turntables and had more than 3,000 employees at the best of times. In 1982 the company had to file for bankruptcy and was bought by the French company Thomson, then in 1988 by the Schneider Rundfunkwerke AG.
The rights to the Dual name (except for record players) have belonged to Karstadt AG since 1996, which sells various consumer electronics devices under this name - but with a modified Dual logo. Record players under the Dual name are now manufactured by Alfred Fehrenbacher GmbH, St. Georgen. Since 2006, turntable production and the DUAL brand have been spun off into the subsidiary DUAL Phono GmbH.
The motto of the company was: "To the good sound belongs Dual".
The name Dual derives from the combination of spring drive and electric motor presented in 1927, the electric spring motor, which was called Dual and initially gave the turntables equipped with it, and later also the company its name.
