Company profile[edit]

Japanese manufacturer of hifi and high-end products. Founded in 1947.
The name Sansui initially means mountain and water. It is believed that influences from Zen philosophy, as seen in paintings of nature by the monk Sesshu, played a role in founder Kosaku Kikuchi's naming.

In the 1970s, Sansui was also a competitor of the high-ender Accuphase. The second half of the 1970s or so also saw the legendary tuners TU-9900 and TU-X1, and into the 1990s high-end pre/power amp combinations such as C-2301/B-2301.
In 1988, Sansui posted losses of about 25% of sales and was sold 51% to London-based Polly Peck International in 1989. From 1992 to 1999, Sansui (like Akai) was owned by the holding company Semi-Tech. Sansui was then acquired by The Grande Holdings (listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange), which had also acquired Nakamichi in 1997.
Various sites on the Internet (e.g. Hifi Studio) report that production was closed in 2001.
