Frank H. McIntosh wurde 1906 in Omaha, Nebraska geboren und wurde 83 Jahre alt. McIntosh war ein äußerst musikalischer Mensch. Ein Stipendium für ein Musikstudium lehnte er ab, ihn interessierte wesentlich mehr die Technik der Musikreproduktion. McIntosh studierte Mathematik und Radiotechnik, schrieb Kolumnen über Radiotechnik für verschiedene Zeitungen und wurde Redakteur für das Magazin "Popular Mechanics". Die McIntosh Firmen Geschichte begann Mitte der 1940er Jahre. Frank H. McIntosh hatte 1945 in Washington eine Beratungsfirma. Die Aufgabe war es hochwertiges technisches Equipment für Radio und TV Sender zu testen und zu beschaffen. Er verlangte von den Anbietern dieser Geräte hohe Leistung in Verbindung mit geringen Verzerrungen. Viele Verstärker erfüllten die an sie gestellten Anforderungen nicht. Das war letztlich für Frank McIntosh der Anstoß eigene Hifi Verstärker zu entwickeln. Die Qualität der von ihm später produzierten Verstärker übertraf nicht nur die an sie gestellten Anforderungen sondern auch den damals gültigen Industriestandard. Um diesen Entwicklungen weiter gerecht werden zu können wurde 1946 von McIntosh Gordon Gow als Assistent angeheuert um gemeinsam einen Verstärker mit einer außergewöhnlichen Leistung zu produzieren und den Standard für die Audio Branche zu setzen. Das Ergebnis war die Endstufe McIntosh 50W-1 (50 Watt Sinus bei einem Frequenzgang von 20 bis 20.000 Hz mit weniger als 0,3% Verzerrungen). Sie enthielt McIntosh's erste patentierte Schaltung (Patent 1949), die Unity Coupled Circuit Schaltung. Diese Technologie ist noch heute im Einsatz. Die Firma McIntosh Laboratory Inc. wurde im Jahr 1949 mit Frank McIntosh als Präsident und Gordon Gow als Vize Präsident gegründet. Weitere Mitarbeiter waren Maurice Painchaud, zuständig für die Qualitätskontrolle und Sidney A. Corderman im Bereich Forschung und Entwicklung. Die Wirtschaft der 50er Jahre wurde unter anderem von der kommerziellen Nutzung von TV und Musikwiedergabe positiv beeinflusst. McIntosh fand schnell seinen Weg in den aufstrebenden HiFi-Markt. Im Jahr 1950 wurde Gordon Gow Exekutive Vize Präsident und die Firma McIntosh produzierte den ersten Vorverstärker, den McIntosh AE-1. McIntosh brachte die Endstufe A116 und den Vorverstärker C108 auf den Markt. 1952 McIntosh`s erstes Lautsprecher System F100. 1953 folgte die Endstufe MC30 und der Vorverstärker C4. 1956 war es nötig auf Grund des Wachstums der Firma diese zu vergrößern. das Unternehmen zog an seinen heutigen Standort: 2 Chambers Street, Binghamton, NY. Die Produktion ging voran und 1957 kam McIntoshs erster Tuner, der UKW/MW Tuner McIntosh MR55, auf den Markt. Die 60er Jahre waren durch Innovationen geprägt und alle Geräte von McIntosh bekamen die berühmte Front Panel Beleuchtung welche die Hifi Geräte von McIntosh unverwechselbar machte. Dieses Design fand großen Anklang bei den Käufern und wird seitdem bis heute beibehalten. Es heißt das Gordon Gow das Aussehen der Frontplatte vorgeschlagen hat und nach dem Entwurf mit Tinte die McIntosh typischen goldenen Lettern aufgetragen hat. Das FM Multipath Anzeigegerät MI-2 war das erste Gerät mit einer Ganzglas Frontplatte. 1962 begann die Zusammenarbeit von McIntosh und Dave O'Brien. Die McIntosh Lautsprecher Produktion begann 1967. Highlights aus dem 60er Jahrzehnt waren die Einführungen der ersten Stereo Endstufe McIntosh MC240, der erste Tuner Vorverstärker mit dem Panloc Montage System, McIntosh MX110, die Tuner MR67 und MR71, das erste reine Transistor Produkt: der Vorverstärker McIntosh C24, die ersten Transistor Endstufen, MC250, MC2100, MC2505 und MC2105, der erste Transistor Tuner-Vorverstärker, der MX112 sowie McIntoshs erster Receiver, der McIntosh MAC1500. Beim Woodstock Music Festival 1969 wurden unter anderem etliche Verstärker von McIntosh verwendet (Mark Levinson stattete ebenfalls das Festival mit seinen Verstärkern aus). Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich das Mc Intosh und Levinson sich bei dieser Gelegenheit kennengelernt haben. 1970 die ersten Modelle der McIntosh Lautsprecher Palette: ML1, ML2 und ML4. Der Tuner McIntosh MR78 wurde 1972 vorgestellt und ist heute als zeitloser Klassiker berühmt. McIntosh bekam im gleichen Jahr ein weiteres Patent für das Schaltungsdesign des Tuners. McIntosh bekam weitere Patente für Lautsprecher und Equalizer Systeme sowie für die Power Guard® Schaltung. 1973 beschloss Frank McIntosh eine separate Receiver-Reihe unter dem Namen Stereotech auf den Mark zu bringen, eine sogenannte Low Budget Serie welche nicht unter dem Namen McIntosh verkauft werden sollte. Der erste UKW / MW Stereo Receiver war der Stereotech 1200, Leistung 2 x 50 Watt an 8 Ohm. Es folgten 1975 die Modelle 1230 und 1270. Die Receiver wurden von McIntosh entworfen und von FEC, Foster Electric Company, in Japan gebaut. Allerdings stellte sich kein wirtschaftlicher Erfolg ein und so wurde die Produktion bereits 1976 wieder eingestellt.
