Während Sony den Laserstrahl in drei Teilstrahlen zerlegt und die beiden Nebenstrahlen zur Spuführung verwendet, wird der Einzelstrahl des Technics auf einen lichtempfindlichen Sensor gelenkt, der in vier Quadrate aufgeteilt ist. Durch die Verschiebung des Strahls zwischen diesen Quadraten wird die Abweichung von der Datenspur festgestellt und korrigiert. Die Summe aller vier Quadrate ergibt das Informationssignal (0 oder 1). Der 1987 auf den Markt gekommene SL-XP 7 ist nach wie vor ein bemerkenswertes Stück Digitaltechnik.

* While Sony splits the laser beam into three partial beams and uses the two secondary beams for tracking, the Technics' single beam is directed to a photosensitive sensor divided into four squares. By shifting the beam between these squares, the deviation from the data track is detected and corrected. The sum of all four squares gives the information signal (0 or 1).
