Such a bad review can only be written by someone whose ears are playing tricks. The A 903 is 1A! Grundig should have stuck with something like this, and with the 9000 series.

A switch corroded after 20 years is not the world. A bit of Teslanol Oszillin, and the world is back in perfect contact. And these Grundigs with the wooden side panels sound impeccable anyway.

Ein nach 20 Jahren korrodierter Schalter ist nicht die Welt. Etwas Oszillin von Teslanol, und die Welt ist wieder wunderbar am Kontakt. Und klingen tun diese Grundigs mit den hölzernen Seitenteilen ohnehin untadelig.

I've had the A-903 for about 20 years now and use it with the CD player, tuner and cassette deck (!) of the A-903 or 905 series and a Dual turntable. It gets everything out of classical, jazz and sometimes hard rock. The amp works and sounds as good today on my JBL HP 430 as it did on day one. Only the little light that backlights the selector switches once broke. I am still very satisfied and can only recommend the A-903.

Habe den A-903 nun seit rund 20 Jahren und verwende ihn mit dem CD-Player, dem Tuner und dem Kassettendeck (!) der A-903- bzw. 905-Serie und einem Dual Plattenspieler. Er holt alles aus Klassik, Jazz und auch mal Hard-Rock heraus. Der Verstärker funktioniert und klingt an meinen JBL HP 430 heute so gut wie am ersten Tag. Nur das Lämpchen, das die Wahlschalter hinterleuchtet, ist mal kaputt gegangen. Bin nach wie vor sehr zufrieden und kann den A-903 nur empfehlen.

The A-903 is a good sounding, valuable amplifier of the upper middle class. Good examples are currently (11/2011) for 60-150 euros to get. This is an excellent price/performance ratio. Standar defect is - as with the 9000 and 9009 series - cold solder joints, especially at the output board, as well as hardening heat conductive paste and (by the heat development) affected electrolytic capacitors. As a prophylaxis it is recommended to unscrew the hybrid power amplifiers and everything else that is connected to thermal paste, clean it and make it fit for the next 20 years. Changing the lighting bulbs is a bit of a fiddly job, especially as the type used there is no longer available. You have to use other bulbs, where you have to extend the legs. Hobbyists like to take LEDs and rebuild the whole thing, then it's quiet for all time. Apart from that, the adjusters used in the A-903 are of such high quality, that even in a 20 year old, well maintained unit, nothing has to scratch. I had already several in the hand, which run also today butter-smoothly and without scratching. A real HiFi tip at a low price! (OSi-12/2011)

Der A-903 ist ein gut klingender, wertiger Verstärker der gehobenen Mittelklasse. Gute Exemplare sind derzeit (11/2011) für 60-150 Euro zu bekommen. Dies ist ein spitzen Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis. Standarfehler ist - wie auch bei den 9000 und 9009er Serien - kalte Lötstellen insbesondere am Ausgangsboard, sowie aushärtende Wärmeleitpaste und (durch die Wärmeentwicklung) in Mitleidenschaft gezogene Elektrolytkondensatoren. Als Prophylaxe empfielt es sich, die Hybridendstufen und alles andere, was mit Wärmeleitpaste in Verbindung steht aufzuschrauben, zu säubern und neu verschmatzt für die nächsten 20 Jahre fit zu machen. Das Wechseln der Beleuchtungsbirnchen ist mit etwas Frikelei verbunden, insbesondere, da die dort verwendete Bauform nirgend mehr zu bekommen ist. Hier müssen andere Lämpchen genommen werden, bei denen man die Beinchen verlängern muß. Bastler nehmen auch schon mal gerne LEDs und bauen das ganze um, dann ist Ruhe für alle Zeit. Ansonsten sind die im A-903 verbauten Einsteller derart hochwertig, das auch bei einem 20 Jahre alten, gepflegten Gerät nichts kratzen muß. Da hatte ich schon mehrere in der Hand, die auch heute butterweich und ohne kratzen laufen. Echter HiFi-Tip zum kleinen Preis! (OSi-12/2011)

It should be mentioned that the amplifier reacts quite sensitively when 4 Ohm speakers are connected to the 8 Ohm output. The high currents are quickly acknowledged by the amplifier with a total failure. The power amplifiers are still available, but this is annoying.

Man sollte noch erwähnen, daß der Verstärker ziemlich empfindlich reagiert, wenn man 4 Ohm Boxen an den 8 Ohm Ausgang hängt. Die hohen Ströme quittiert die Endstufe schnell mit einem Totalausfall. Die Endstufen sind zwar noch erhältlich, ärgerlich ist das aber allemal.
